Truly Amazing….New Cotton Fabric Cleans Itself When Exposed to Ordinary Sunlight

Newswise — Imagine jeans, sweats or socks that clean and de-odorize themselves when hung on a clothesline in the sun or draped on a balcony railing. Scientists are reporting development of a new cotton fabric that does clean itself of stains and bacteria when exposed to ordinary sunlight. Their report appears in the ACS’ journal Applied Materials & Interfaces.

Mingce Long and Deyong Wu say their fabric uses a coating made from a compound of titanium dioxide, the white material used in everything from white paint to foods to sunscreen lotions. Titanium dioxide breaks down dirt and kills microbes when exposed to some types of light. It already has found uses in self-cleaning windows, kitchen and bathroom tiles, odor-free socks and other products. Self-cleaning cotton fabrics have been made in the past, the authors note, but they self-clean thoroughly only when exposed to ultraviolet rays. So they set out to develop a new cotton fabric that cleans itself when exposed to ordinary sunlight.

Their report describes cotton fabric coated with nanoparticles made from a compound of titanium dioxide and nitrogen. They show that fabric coated with the material removes an orange dye stain when exposed to sunlight. Further dispersing nanoparticles composed of silver and iodine accelerates the discoloration process. The coating remains intact after washing and drying.

The authors acknowledge funding from Donghua University and the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

New Laws, Ads Expose White Coat Deception in Plastic Surgery

Denver, Colorado, September 26, 2011 – The world’s largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons is taking action to warn patients to investigate their doctor’s qualifications before undergoing plastic surgery procedures.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is launching a new public safety campaign on the heels of a string of incidents involving plastic surgeries gone wrong during procedures performed by non-board-certified plastic surgeons. The ASPS will unveil their new campaign on September 26, 2011 during the ASPS Annual Meeting in Denver.

“Patients are getting injured, some are dying during procedures performed by non-board-certified plastic surgeons,” said Malcolm Z. Roth, MD, ASPS President. “We want patients to understand what to ask their doctor and what to look for so that they can maximize their chance of a safe and successful procedure.” The message in the new ASPS Public Service Announcement focuses on exposing what plastic surgery industry leaders call “white coat deception.” Roth explained that just because a doctor wears a white coat does not mean he or she is qualified to perform plastic surgery.

“There is a misconception among consumers that as long as a doctor is certified in a medical field that he or she is qualified to practice plastic surgery. This is absolutely wrong and it is dangerous for patients,” said Dr. Roth. “If you are considering a plastic surgery procedure it is critical that your doctor is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. This is the best way to be certain that he or she has completed the necessary training and meets certain standards to practice plastic surgery.” Consumers may wonder how doctors who are not board certified in plastic surgery are able to perform such procedures. The reason is that it is perfectly legal in the United States for any doctor with a medical license to practice in any medical field. Only four states — California, Florida, Louisiana and Texas — have tough Truth-In-Advertising measures on the books which require medical providers to be more transparent about their training.

“Today when you get your medical license you can practice in any medical field that you choose,” said Dr. Steven Teitelbaum, MD, an ASPS Member Surgeon who practices in the Los Angeles area. “What should happen is that every state medical board should say, ‘if you’re trained in pediatrics you are allowed to practice pediatrics and if you’re trained in orthopedics you can practice orthopedics.’ But, unfortunately, most state laws and regulations enable some physicians to drift into the practice of plastic surgery without proper training and certification. It has become increasingly apparent that some physicians fail to use proper judgment and enter into practice areas beyond their core training,” he said.

Dr. Teitelbaum said that he is seeing an increase in requests to “fix” botched plastic surgery procedures from non-board-certified plastic surgeons such as in the case of his patient Dinora Rodriguez.

Rodriguez had breast implant surgery from a non-board-certified plastic surgeon and woke up horrified to learn that her implants were merged together. During the same procedure her previous doctor decided to operate on her eyes without her consent. Now Dinora can no longer close her eyes completely.

“It was a terrible experience waking up from surgery and seeing that this had happened. I didn’t know to check my doctor’s qualifications and I regret it,” said Rodriguez.

The ASPS has these tips for validating your doctor’s qualifications:
-Ask if your doctor is board certified in plastic surgery by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
-Look for a certificate in the doctor’s office that includes the seal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
-If you have any doubts about their certification go to www.plasticsurgery.org and click on “Find a Surgeon” to see if your doctor is listed on the ASPS site.

Asia Retail News: Chinese Consumers Help Luxury Retailers Rebuff Sluggish Economy

Newswise — Sales of luxury goods, which analysts say could spike as much as eight percent this year, are soaring thanks to expanding personal wealth in China, says a luxury retail expert at Washington University in St. Louis.

“One of the key factors driving global sales of luxury goods is the burgeoning Chinese economy and the concomitant expansion of its affluent classes,” says Martin K. Sneider, adjunct professor of marketing at Olin Business School.

“These people are anxious to demonstrate their successes and newly found wealth,” he says. “What better way than purchasing and displaying or wearing the signature luxury items that Louis Vuitton and other similar brands market?”

While the United States hopes to avoid a “double-dip” recession, global demand for luxury goods is skyrocketing.

Luxury retail giant Moët-Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH), the world’s largest maker of luxury goods, announced recently that profits beat analysts estimates in the first six months of 2011 as demand for its products soared in America, Europe and emerging markets.

LVMH plans to open two new stores in Asia and expand four others this year.

Hermes International SCA, the French maker of luxury handbags and silk scarves, raised its target for annual revenue growth, saying first half operating profit, when numbers are released, should grow 12 to 14 percent.

Domestically, despite what many see as a still fragile economic outlook, the luxury market has taken off as well.

“The stock market has recovered, commercial real estate has rebounded and corporate earnings and salaries are robust,” Sneider says. “The self-imposed austerity of 2008 and 2009 is but a distant painful memory for wealthy Americans. Comparative store sales are up every month for Saks and Neiman-Marcus, which provides further proof that for their customers the recession is history.”

Sneider teaches the “Luxury Apparel Marketing” course at Olin Business School. During a two-week class tour of luxury goods’ headquarters in Europe this year, Sneider and his students learned first hand about the upturn in this niche market.

“It was an eye opening experience for the students,” Sneider says. “We had presentations from senior executives, buyers and strategists from Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Hermes, Burberry, Brunello Cucinelli, Gucci, Armani and more. I think the students were able to see the pride these retailers take in their products and some of the reasons they are expanding so quickly.”
